In a major political push, Donald Trump’s special envoy is scheduled to hold discussions with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and various leaders from Europe in Berlin over the coming days, as US officials seeks a workable strategy to halt the current conflict.
Diplomatic Talks and Truce Efforts
Berlin announced it is hosting US and Ukrainian representatives for preliminary consultations focusing on a prospective truce, ahead of a more extensive meeting involving European leaders and President Zelenskyy scheduled for Monday. In a national address, Zelenskyy affirmed the upcoming engagement with the US representative Steve Witkoff: “Most importantly, I will be conferring with envoys of President Trump, and there will additionally be meetings with our European partners, with several leaders, regarding the foundation of peace – a political agreement to terminate the war,” he declared.
Kremlin Conditions for a Ceasefire
Meanwhile, Kremlin senior diplomat Yuri Ushakov restated that Russia would exclusively agree to a ceasefire once Ukrainian forces leave areas in the eastern oblast they currently hold. Ushakov stated that Moscow’s security forces and interior ministry forces would remain in sections of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas should the area were to become a demilitarised zone under a potential settlement – a stipulation considered unacceptable for Kyiv.
Nighttime Strikes Hit Ukrainian Infrastructure
Amid a separate escalation, Russian forces attacked multiple Ukrainian regions during the night, concentrating on the country’s power and maritime facilities, as stated by President Zelenskyy. He said the attacks utilized over 450 drones and 30 missiles. As temperatures close to freezing, Ukraine’s interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, stated more than a million residents were left without electricity.
Furthermore, an attack on the coastal hub of Odesa led to grain silos being set ablaze, according to a senior Ukrainian official Oleksiy Kuleba. Local officials reported that two individuals were wounded in attacks on the wider region.
Defense and Aid Updates
Against a backdrop of growing worries about the Russian threat, Germany announced it will dispatch a team of engineers to Poland to aid in a initiative to reinforce the country’s border with Belarus. Poland, a strong supporter of Ukraine, announced plans last year to bolster a significant section of its frontier. The main role of the German soldiers will be “engineering activities,” a defence ministry spokesperson clarified.
In a different event, approximately 480 people were evacuated from a rail service running between the city in Poland of Przemysl and Kyiv following police responded to a report about a threat. No one was hurt, and authorities did not elaborate on the specific threat. Polish security services remain on heightened alert due to multiple attempts to sabotage trains on the line linking Warsaw to the Ukrainian border.
Elsewhere, Ukrainian naval officials accused Russia of intentionally targeting a commercial Turkish vessel transporting sunflower oil to Egypt with a drone on Saturday. The navy said the vessel ‘VIVA’ was struck but continued on its journey, with none of the 11 crew members injured.
Finally, Ukraine received 114 detainees released by Belarus on Saturday, according to the country’s prisoner exchange body. The released individuals are to get medical attention, and any nationals of Belarus who wish will be relocated to Poland or Lithuania.
