The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is enduring drought conditions. This significant achievement follows grueling years marked by below-average rain that worsened blaze threats and strained its huge agribusiness.
A Map Indicates No Dryness
The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program illustrated that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This change came after weeks of significant storms that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a local meteorologist.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in widespread flooding, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Even into late December, areas like the state's northeast corner were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the beginning of January washed away those remaining dry spots.
The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average
However, hydrologists note that the end of drought status is not the same as complete water security. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation show it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.
This mountain snow, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for long-term water security. State experts stress that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the months ahead.
“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Although the monitor is entirely green, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance throughout the months to come.
