Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not pursuing a comeback in football management, explaining that it would be challenging to recreate the special mission he felt as England’s manager.

He indicated his intention to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the youth and addressing what he labeled a dominant downbeat story now prevalent in the country.

Pursuing Different Paths Beyond Football

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was asked about rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and abroad.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

A Passion for Role Models

Ahead of the publication of his new title, his new work on leadership, he emphasized that he is highly enthusiastic about providing role models for the youth, applying lessons from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He feels that his journey managing the squad, during which the team evolved from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Guiding Young People

Speaking from his experience as a father, Southgate commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

The former manager stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often emphasizes conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he commented. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His new release, the book Dear England, is scheduled to offer deeper reflections on leadership and country pride drawn from his notable professional journey.
