The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new initialism came to light a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, according to doctors including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a minor who has seen the death of their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are still being committed. Authorities rejects these claims, consistent with how it refutes everything it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision turns 70 next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that was originally built on peace has devolved into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
