The movie, though, could coincide so closely with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a endorsement instead of a challenge.

The Manufactured Superhero

For years, the Russian political apparatus and the country's pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a TV series launched last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” Russia from chaos. Although he is called Mikhail, the implication is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. An adaptation based on a popular book aims to subvert the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is presented as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking permanent power.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody actually pleaded with him to take the job. The presidency was effectively a casting call with no shortage of candidates. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice.

• According to a journalist who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. His harder interpretation led local outlets and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with his surfaced on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star popular with Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its exclusion of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, Putin is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen on screen. His influence is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it might seek to question.
