New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
