Over a span of 180 minutes, England's Ben Stokes threatened to produce a re-enactment of the famous knock that cemented his name into Ashes folklore. While Headingley 2019 is recalled for its blistering finish, the bedrock of stubborn resistance upon which it was built is often overlooked.

However, it underscored the significant differences between the teams. England has been second best in the fielding department, spilling five opportunities during Australia's massive first innings of 511. By contrast, their opponents were flawless, epitomized by a stunning one-handed catch by Smith at slip to remove Jacks.

Furthermore, England were outsmarted by Australia, who expertly used the pink-ball conditions. Even one final English lapse in concentration before their total of 241 ended: Gus Atkinson, a capable batsman, fell to a ill-advised hook shot directly to a fielder.
