Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
