As Swimmers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Image Captures Rescuer Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, detected cracking sounds reverberating around the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her home, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw signaled a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, conversing with a couple who had hurried up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone approaching behind her. It was a rescuer, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to go in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous acts of courage in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, police and ambulance crews attending to numerous victims.

Community Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the incident serving as a temporary medical station. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including entering the ocean to rescue people needing help.

Following the attack, messages of appreciation flooded in. One post shared gratitude for the responders who showed that “goodness will always triumph over darkness”.

The squad of rescuers later shared a communication, noting they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and support. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the aim that it aids those involved.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many full-time lifeguards, said that the staff rose to the occasion from the second the shooting began right into late that night.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” stated a mayor.

“These individuals exhibit altruism every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores secure for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the atrocity of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have witnessed in the midst of such hatred.”
