American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak since the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights extending upward to the city of Oakland, California.

The FAA notice went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an mean of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the US, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA advised travelers in the state to check with airlines about updated departure times.

The situation comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in LA on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak periods to travel by air in the US.

Strain on US air travel helped end a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the same day on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
