A extensive rescue and recovery mission is presently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two unlocated sailing vessels carrying relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine sailors, per a military release.

The boats had been scheduled to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Relief to the Nation

The island nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation endures widespread national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and each boat are outfitted with proper navigational gear and communication devices," a representative for the convoy commented.

The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Earlier Humanitarian Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.

That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" after the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and provisions.

Broader Political Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country began.

The United Nations have since highlighted "dire" shortages of supplies, with over 50k surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba amid power shortages.

Political measures have increased over the past months, with remarks from several leaders highlighting the complicated nature of diplomatic ties.

Responding to recent statements, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that initial phases of discussions commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to find the sailboats and secure the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
