During payment at Aldi, I experienced a problem settling the bill for my $100 grocery shop. It wasn't about lacking funds, rather I had failed to move funds into our everyday transaction account. I was trying to move the money over quickly as I stood in line, but the banking app was down.
I had my two little kids with me, an older toddler and an infant, one of whom began crying loudly. As the line grew longer of shoppers behind me, the cashier set aside my receipt for the items already scanned and held it, then moved on to assisting the next shoppers.
Frantically, I reached out to my partner and asked him to head to the grocery store with his bank card to cover the cost, because it looked doubtful that I would manage to completing the payment. While I was on the phone, a woman waiting in queue covered her shopping costs – before saying to the employee, “I’ll pay for hers, too.”
I tried to protest, yet she would not accept it. She simply stated:
“Just pay it back in the community somehow.”
I was deeply touched that a person would act so kindly toward me – it was incredibly thoughtful. This kind soul observed I appeared anxious and self-conscious in the crowded checkout line and intervened to help.
Our community is relatively small, but because it all happened so fast, I am unsure exactly who helped that covered my shopping, so I haven’t been able to thank her.
But I did honour that kind woman’s request. Previously, I possessed a large collection of baby stuff listed on online marketplaces. However, following that incident, I took it down and shared in a community exchange group enabling me to give everything away at no cost to someone in need. A lady caring for a newborn foster child accepted my proposal, therefore, I am pleased that I could pay forward the kindness.
